Homemade Wedding Supplies: a Quaint, Charming AlternativeHowever, wedding supplies such as centerpieces and party favors are a great point of budgeting - homemade and handcrafted wedding supplies are actually possible - home sewn wedding gowns and home baked wedding cakes will often have telltale signs that scream "homemade!" but centerpieces and favors can be homemade or handcrafted and still look impeccable. Made at Home The most inexpensive way to get wedding supplies is to make them yourself. The idea of patching together gift baskets and centerpieces can seem intimidating, but it can also give you the chance to be creative. As opposed to indulging in ridiculous themed weddings (which can be expensive), personalizing a wedding with handmade wedding supplies is a great way to show your guests and members of your wedding party just how much they mean to you. Putting together a basket yourself for your bridesmaids and groomsmen is an especially a great idea. As opposed to putting together an expensive gift bag, assembling gifts together yourself can result in much more personal and touching swag. A great idea would be putting together a CD compilation of the songs played at the wedding - printing personalized liner notes, as well, with your own personal chosen track listing is a great way to leave guests with something that will last long after the wedding ceremony. Another great idea is to allow guests to leave the wedding with personalized wine glasses. A friend of mine (along with her small army of girlfriends) made homemade candles in the wine glasses. While this is definitely an exhausting task, the homemade candles in the wineglasses (which my friend bought at cost in bulk) were a great way to shave a bit off the budget for the wedding supplies. An artist friend of mine bought inexpensive picture frames, and created small portraits of each member of the wedding party included in the gift basket. Both the wine glass and the picture frames are great, practical souvenirs from the wedding that do not have to bleed the wedding supplies budget. Wedding centerpieces are a little more difficult, but not impossible. Putting together decorative wreaths with dried fruits and beautiful flowers is a great idea - remember to use artificial flowers in the centerpieces that do not clash with the wedding's overall flower scheme. Some people have gone as far as putting live goldfish in their centerpieces - not a bad idea, though goldfish have a tendency to go belly-up at the most inopportune time, and nothing puts people off that poached salmon you are serving at the wedding more than a dead fish. But the idea of combining different elements for the centerpieces is clever - if the wedding is being held in a rural setting, putting together a centerpiece of a horseshoe, surrounded by beautiful wildflowers and baby's breath is a clever and witty idea. Having a Parisian theme is also quite easy - miniature Eiffel Towers with other Gallic touches like small French flags or porcelain roosters are also adorable and affordable parts of an elegant sum. Again, the cost of these homemade centerpieces will allow for you to keep your wedding supplies budget very low. Making homemade wedding supplies has the potential of being hokey and cheesy-looking, but with advance planning, and cooperation with friends who can be seen as amateur experts, the experience can be fun and rewarding as the guests will leave, knowing that much of what they've enjoyed at the wedding was done by hand and with love. |
